My question is what does Thank You mean? Ok, to be specific when you tell a girl that you like her and she replies "Thank You!!" that too without any pause.
Yeah, your guess is right, it happened with me few days back and you guys can very well guess the girl. Now if interested let us dive in detail.
We had been meeting all the weekends and this generally happened in a group of 3 or more. So last week I decided that lets have one on one. I asked her out on wednesday for dinner. I had decided that I will atleast tell her that I like her. So we went out to a nearby place on our bikes (yeah its not a fancy bollywood movie and I dont have a spare helmet.) After talking an hour about different things on dinner, I felt that words were not coming out. We were having good time making fun of each other and all. Then I decided that its now or never. So I start: did you like any guys around. Her : Not really, the guys in intel are so old generally. I: but there are so many nice interns around ;). She: .. something ...... I : so what kind of guys do you like? She : lists 3 qualities.. nice , mature and nerdy (yeah she is in engineering;)). I was thinking to myself: my gawd thats a perfect match. Then some silence. She: So did you like any girls. I : Yeah I liked a few. She and me : hehehehehe. (I dont know how I came up with that). then a pause ... And you are one of them. (Man! I could not be more obvious.) She : hehehe. Me : Seriously!!
She: Thank YOu! Silence for a moment and then I switched the topic. This is the best I could do.
Anyways after that we walked home and again we talked about various things like kind of friends we have. and kind of friends she like and life in general. Felt like a good date except the romance part was very less :)).
Again this weekend we went to indian movie had good time together, but perhaps she does not like me in that way. Anyway I am happy that I told her what I felt.

Captain Jack Sparrow and the Curse of the White Pearl
"Wipe my glasses", shouted Jack.
It was raining hard, accompanied with lashes of wind. Tiny drops of water were pinching like pins on face. The crew of the boat were not sure if they will see the shore again. Suddenly, the only lady crew in the boat shouted, "light... I can see a light". The boat was almost a mile from there. Captain started steering the boat towards it.

---------------------------
It was just another cloudy day. We (my BIL, sis and myself) started for Kinzua Dam from Pittsburgh at around 10AM following route 79 and 6. Route 6 is the scenic drive of Pittsburgh. Fall ornates the trees with all colors making the road beautiful. However, it is not fall yet, but we could see the touch of fall colors in some trees. We reached the dam at around 1:00. We spent some time in the reservoir beach, which is an artificial one. Then we rented a boat from the marina for two hours. It was a small boat which could accommodate 5 people and there were only three of us. We took turns driving the boat. My BIL wanted to project the image of "Bond, James Bond" and took turns with high speed. No, nothing bad happened ... :)
Anyways, we could see a black disc covering the sky over us. It looked just like the 'Independence Day' scene when the UFO lands. The sunbeams and shade made beautiful scene which we captured in our camera. Suddenly, we could see some white clouds coming over the lake from the right side... We had never seen anything like that. Before we could start taking photo of that nice scene, we realized that it was not cloud; It was rain! Soon our boat was stormed with waves. My sister shouts, "put the camera in that box below the seat", and my BIL says "forget the camera, it is least important now! Can you please wipe my glasses?". We could hardly see things at 10 feet distance and the rain was so hard that as if someone was pinching all over the face. The boat was being rocked so vigorously that we thought that this is it... we won't be able to see the shore with the boat. Then, my sister shouts, "light ...". And there was a light! It was a light from the bridge over the reservoir. We started driving the boat towards that light and finally we could see the place from where we had rented the boat. When we reached there, we did not find the lady who was working there. One window of that place was blown away by the wind. We felt lucky that nothing bad happened, but it made our day. Without the rain and storm, it would not have been so exciting and interesting. :)
I could not capture the photos of the rain and storm, but the Dam pictures are here

Rajesh, mere aankhon se NYC dekh le
I have hunch that one of you might have cursed my NYC trip... it was a disaster.
We started driving for NYC in the evening at around 8PM from PIT and it took 7 hrs of driving to reach there!!! Last one hour, we were roaming around near NYC border to find our hotel. Man! It is difficult not to survive without internet and GPS. I had to find the direction using my phone to reach hotel.
Next day, once again, map problem ... New York is a labyrinth, seriously! We got lost so many times. Finally, we were there in liberty state park at 2PM. We could not go on top of the statue, because it requires the permit to be taken at least two days before the visit. Anyways, we started for Times Square from there. How many of you have been to Dharmatala, Kolkata? Rajesh, Anindya, you should have. Imagine too much lights and high-rise buildings in Dharmatala and you are in Times Square. You will find same kind of noise and rule-breaking... you follow just one rule... dont follow any :P
Times Square is pretty close to Empire State. Once the tallest building on earth is the biggest hype. You pay $18-60 for different kind of views and audio tours. You get a nice view of the city from there, but 60$ for such a view only! Thats ridiculous!!!
We could not go for the Broadway show. I wanted to experience that, but due to lack of time and the f***ing traffic of NYC, we could not make it. Anyways, there is always a next time :)
Yesterday, we had lunch in a Bangladeshi restaurant. Dude! That was awesome. Authentic Bengali food and fish after such a long time!!! We bought ~200$ worth fish from there, including hilsa, pomfret etc. Looks like I am going to have mast type food here :D
I shall send link to the pics soon. The "preliminary stage" thingy is too immature to broadcast right now. I shall tell you that if I get any response. Rajesh, that plan was not "our", you are the one who might be interested in it. Anyways, no work and only masti is my intention, but the horrible weather is the problem. Almost everyday, there is going to be a thunderstorm for next couple of days and it is always cloudy. I already miss sunny California. Anyways, I shall keep you updated with my status. Till then, Adios !

Sleepless (and single) in Seattle: Part II
On (un)popular demand, I am continuing my earlier post. In case anyone wants a quick recap, the post spoke about a certain dinner episode in a certain Italian restaurant with a certain smart, young and handsome instantiation of the male species.
Part II takes place in a chinese restaurant.
Boss: So are you going to have a completely arranged marriage?
I: What?
Boss: [Repeats]
I: Err..Hmmm..[Start to say something but all that comes out is a giggle]...er
Boss: Whats funny?
I: I guess.. I must say.. Im not going to have an arranged marriage
Boss: You dont "have to " say.. You can be frank.. I think you are scared of me..
I: Im not scared
Boss: You'r not???
I: Oh oh, was that the wrong answer?!
I : What is the point of this conversation?
Boss: There is no point. If every conversation had a point, people would be quiet most of the time. [What profound philosophy, I think]
Scene changes to Trinity, a nightclub in seattle. Weekend. Half a bottle of wine later...
Boss: Why are you just sitting here, when all those men are out there? You should go and dance ...
I: I dont really care about any of them..
Boss: Why dont you date of them...Why dont you show interest in any men ever..
I: I dont really care about men.. I'm keeping off men in general
Boss: If i werent you'r mentor, I would have asked you something
I: Ask
Boss: Are you a l******
I: What the...dont make me swear
So boss starts from a different angle..
I really think you should date someone...
Does anyone else agree? :)

Mitti Kke Rangg
Whoa! looks like the action's begun again. If I'd made a movie about it, I'd definitely put in 'it is different' in my press releases...plus the mandatory 'it's a story of love and lust, action and drama, and powerful emotions'. Why, you say? When you've seen as many films as I have, life ceases to hold any surprises. Everything is a pattern that has been seen, written down, choreographed and acted and released and seen countless times over again.
Look around you...Gaze into the distance and look up and west into the little hamlet of Seattle. A little girl lives there, with a deep sense of purpose, a high...very high...bar for achievement, and not a little sense of the spirit that once infused the fair queen Cleopatra. Her infinite drive...for that extra touch to her art...for that extra step on a path no one with her past has ever been before fail to mask a buccaneering streak that has laid to waste countless hearts in its wake. Even as I write this heart wrenching story, a honest-to-the-soil guy toils away in his new field...bare feet and bare backed under a blazing sun....learning from farmers with gaunt frames draped in a modest lungi that barely reaches their knees. Their sinewy bodies and bunched musles and dark skins speak of their bond with the earth...built over centuries of toil and reward and pain and pleasure. He will be one of them...Not for him the wasteful drama of a cube-farm...He has to Return..to his roots..to home....under the sun and in the fields where even the sparrows recognize him as their own...and the earth can heal all their wounds...
So there it is....a girl chasing, no creating, her destiny in a world where the future is today and and the today's already ancient history...and a guy discovering his self away from the very world his love is helping create.
(trrooiing...nirma detergent tikia, iske jhaag ne jaadu, kar diya. Toomal teemala fedi...nirma se aayi...rangeen kapde bhi chammak chammak jayen...nirma detergent tikia!! Ralco ka bhakti abhinandan: Mitti Kke Rangg...)
Will their yearning souls ever meet? And what of her handsome new mentor? Wait, I spy a beautiful girl in the village...who's captivated by the return of the prodigal? ......
Where does the story go from here?

Bridge Pedal - biking on the portland bridges

Last weekend was awesome! I rode my bike along the 8 bridges of portland. It was 24 miles and the weather was really nice that day. Some 20000 bikers participated. It was a good portland experience. I got some nice shots. Then we went to the bite - food and drink festival just by the river front. There was some yummy food like coconut prawns, mushroom steaks, crab cake and all. Some good bands were also playing live music, i had some beer and had real good fun.
We also listened to some blues and raggae by band the night before. It was some famous band, the place was really crowded. Live music is so good to listen to.
Then we went to this saturday market, which is really famous in portland. there are some small shops set up temporarily, there you get Nepali food too. It was a good local experience. The best part was that all this while I was Cindy, she is so nice and fun to be with! She sings so beautifully. Imagine this ... the night is almost coming along .. there is a cool bridge blowing... there is no one around.... , I am biking with her back home from the train station and Cindy is singing in her beautiful voice. It felt so nice. Sigh.... if only I had more guts. Looks like this will pass this way, with only 2 weeks left for her. Its so difficult to understand girls.. I did not get any signals from her so far and I am also holding back. i am having real hard time trying to flirt with her. perhaps I should stop thinking about it. Anyways guys.. hope you all are having good time.

Subconscious computing
I recently volunteered for an experiment in brain-computer interfaces, here at MSR. It involved having a multitude of electrodes clipped to my head and the brain signals were being collected. Folks at UW are doing some cool stuff on this front. Check out
www.cs.washington.edu/homes/pshenoy/BrainControlledRobot.html
Imagine being able to control machines with your brain. Powerful. Just imagine the other way round, scary!
Meanwhile, I'm hoping they cant figure out what I was thinking using those brain signals!

My new bike

Hi Guys!
I finally got my bike. Its a Honda CBR 600 F4. I was looking for a SV650 but this bike looked good and I was getting a good deal, so I got it. I know, wahts coming to your mind (Yes I am a mind reader!!) ... :) I will be more careful this time.
Last weekend was a lot of fun, I went to crater lake and then to sand dunces on oregon beach near Florence. I rode a quad and believe me it was awesome!!
Here are the pictures from the trip
http://picasaweb.google.com/rajesh.tripathi/CraterLake
Last friday we also had intel interns picnic, which was lots of fun. The best part was water melon eating competition and the tug of war.

Sleepless (and single) in seattle
They were good times and they were bad times...
Friday evening 8 pm. After an entire day in the park (and the entire week in parks and basements)
Boss: We'v done a great job. Excellent, I'm very excited. The world will never be the same again (and all that kind of stuff..)
Me: Boss, we missed wine down and now I missed going to the movie. You need to compensate me for the alcohol, food and entertainment.
Boss: Oh, Im so sorry, I dint mean to do that. I'll treat you to dinner tonight.
Enter Frankie's, an Italian pasta place.
Steward (smiles pleasantly): Are you guys having a good evening? Would you like the table in the corner.
Me thinks, oh oh.. Dont mistake us...
Waitress (smiles again): How are you guys doing? Did you guys go a movie this eve?
Me thinks (grinding my teeth): How dare you rub it in! I DID NOT go to the movie this eve! And you know thanks to who!
Boss: This is exciting stuff. This opens up so many directions..
Sigh.
One glass of wine later,
Boss: You know those guys think we are on a date. The corner table, movies...hehehehe
Sigh...........
Two glasses of wine later,
Boss: You'r not single, are you?
Me: I am
Boss: I dont believe you are single.
Me: Of course I am, why cant I be single?
Three or four glasses later,
Me: How about you?
Boss: I am married.
Me thinks: Damn, but are you happily married?
1 paper submitted. One more resubmission tomorrow. I hope *someone* is having a good time!
Good news, well, there isnt one.
Part II to the dinner to come soon.

Too much of a (hic) good thing...
Overread in a newspaper:
"Cocktail is a stimulating liquor composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters — it is vulgarly called a bittered sling and is supposed to be an excellent electioneering potion, inasmuch as it renders the heart stout and bold, at the same time that it fuddles the head. It is said, also to be of great use to a Democratic candidate: because a person, having swallowed a glass of it, is ready to swallow anything else"
Cheers.
